About the Site

Success with Seed is the name of our site and our wish for all gardeners who attempt gardening from seed. Whether you start your seeds indoors using elaborate equipment or just direct sow in your backyard, you will find useful information here. This site is based on the contents of Park's Success with Seed, second edition, written by Karen Park Jennings, and published in 2006 by the Park Seed Company.

The Sow & Grow and Step-by-Step tabs provide detailed information to help you get your seeds started, strengthened, and safely transplanted. The Flowers, Vegetables, and Plant Cross Reference tabs contain extensive plant lists that can link you to culture information, accompanied by photos of the seed, seedling, and mature specimen for each plant. Also check Snips & Sprouts twice monthly for a new article of interest to seed-loving gardeners.

In addition to informative content, this site provides you with opportunities to share questions and ideas with other gardeners. We invite you to explore to your heart's content, and also to give us your ideas for improving and extending the site. We hope you'll join some of the forums and also send questions to Ask SwS.

In addition to contents from the book, the other writing you'll encounter on this site is from Anne Moore, our resident horticulture guru, fellow garden-lover, and award-winning writer.

Gardeners' Quotes

ON A SEED

This was the goal of the leaf and the root.
For this did the blossom burn its hour.
This little grain is the ultimate fruit.
This is the awesome vessel of power.

For this is the source of the root and the bud...
World unto world unto world remolded.
This is the seed, compact of God,
Wherein all mystery is enfolded.
Georgie Starbuck Galbraith, The New York Times, 1960
